While consumers sometimes use the terms interchangeably, crossovers and SUVs share a few key differences that appeal to different drivers. The body of a crossover like the VW Tiguan and Honda CRV is a lighter unibody construction built on a car platform rather than a truck chassis. In other words, the frame and body are formed together to reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency. So it should come as no surprise that compact crossover SUVs are now all the rage. The Tiguan 2023 and Honda CRV 2023 are two the segment’s most popular models, so we’ve compared them in several ways. With a robust list of advantages, the Tiguan stands out in three big ways.

Tiguan vs CRV: Performance

Volkswagen powers its latest Tiguan with a reasonably strong engine. The front-wheel car accelerates to 60 in under 10 seconds, which is average for its class. Power distribution can jitter and underreact to the pedal, but there is excellent weighting and accuracy while steering. Likewise, the brakes feel like and easy to control, allowing drivers to stop without thinking twice about it. Low-grip tires mean the Tiguan’s stopping power is underwhelming, but drivers can retain composure after an emergency brake. The CRV, on the other hand, is responsive but by no means a speedy vehicle with its 1.5-liter engine. The brakes function well at all pressures, but drivers might struggle climbing long mountain grades. Ultimately, both crossovers have their pros and cons, but the Tiguan’s overall driving feel makes it the more competitive option.

Tiguan vs CRV: Interior and Comfort

The Tiguan receives high marks for its visibility and adjustable driving position. Additionally, it’s easy to step in and out of the vehicle through its large door openings, although the third row is still a tight space for passengers of any size. The second-row seats slide forward to help accommodate them, but it takes some muscle to move them. Fortunately, Volkswagen clearly focused on comfort with the Tiguan, rounding off sharp bumps and floating over road imperfections without losing stability. Once underway, a Tiguan drives quiet and lets in little noise, even at highway speeds. The engine does roar when accelerating from a stop, but it quickly calms itself and fades away. The CRV also rides well with a soft suspension, but you’ll feel bumps in the pavement. To compensate, Honda deployed a sophisticated theme for its interior, which includes plush, heated front seats. Unfortunately, the CRV still doesn’t have a ventilated option for its seats. That won’t be a problem for a test drive online, but it’ll matter in the real world, giving the Tiguan yet another category win.

Tiguan vs CRV: Technology

The newest Tiguan squarely beats the Honda CRV 2023 in terms of technology offerings. The former’s eight-inch touchscreen automatically displays virtual buttons when it detects a hand close to the screen. Likewise, it integrates smartphone use through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are standard for all trims, and front passengers get a pair of USB-C ports. Upper models include wireless charging, but it takes over one of the USB-C ports. Third-row passengers do not have any ports. Still, the advanced driver aids are easy to use, even on the open highway. The CRV has a standard seven-inch screen that is average for its class. It also has standard wireless smartphone connectivity and an average voice recognition system on the top trim.
