Weather May Not Be Your Friend
Keeping your car outdoors for long periods of time can cause problems due to the elements, especially in Columbus. Temperature fluctuations can cause condensation to build up in your gas tank, so we recommend you fill up your tank before letting it sit to prevent issues. UV light can cause damage over time to your vehicle's exterior, such as the tires. We recommend using a car cover if leaving your car out in the Ohio weather for long. A cover can prevent not only UV damage but also scrapes and debris buildup.
Be Sure to Drive Your Vehicle Periodically to Keep Your Car Running Smoothly
Likely the most important thing to maintain when you're driving less is your car's battery. Sitting unused for long periods, the battery can die, potentially leaving you stranded when you decide to take a ride. We recommend you drive your vehicle, even for a few minutes, a few times a month to keep your battery going. This also ensures that your car's fluids are adequately distributed to the parts that need it. Also, keep in mind that your tires need some care as well. After sitting for long periods they may lose pressure, requiring inflation to keep them running smoothly. Your tires also need to be rotated frequently by driving or simply moving your car forward or backward a bit to prevent flat spots from forming on the side that contacts the ground.
Stay on Top of Preventative Maintenance Such as Oil Changes
Even when you aren't driving your car and racking up mileage, your car's oil still needs to be changed. Oil can deteriorate over time, and water condensation can build up, especially with temperature changes, such as those we see here in Ohio. Changing the oil doesn't always depend on the number of miles since your last change. Our certified technicians recommend having your oil changed approximately every six months, even if you are driving less. Additionally, other components such as belts and rubber hoses can deteriorate over time, causing cracks and potential leaks.
