What is an Alternator?
A properly functioning alternator is essential to generating power for the vehicle. The alternator is a major component of the charging system for most types of vehicles. It is generally bolted to the engine and is part of several components that are driven by the serpentine belt. The role of the alternator is to charge the car battery when the engine is running. If the alternator stops working, the vehicle will not be able to function for long. Once the power from the battery finishes, there will be no power available to the vehicle, and the engine will stall.
Common Signs of a Bad Alternator
Some vehicles have warning lights in the dashboard, alerting them of issues with the alternator. However, this warning light comes on when you turn the ignition but might disappear once the engine is started. Another common sign of a bad alternator is the dimming of the dashboard lights or headlights. With a bad alternator, the vehicle's electrical system does not get adequate power, and the electrical components start to malfunction or underperform. Some common signs of a bad alternator are similar to issues with the battery, battery terminals, or a bad serpentine belt. Our technicians can inspect the vehicle to determine which component of the vehicle is faulty.
The Service Interval for the Alternator
Under ideal conditions, the alternator should last a long time with no issues. However, there can be a few reasons for premature failure or problems with an alternator. If water gets into the alternator or a weak battery puts excessive stress on the alternator, it can be damaged. A leak of the engine oil or coolant can also cause damage to the alternator. During car wash or cleaning, the alternator should be protected from soap, detergent, and water.
